Prison Beta for 12/28

Last night, Mark Mitchell (the pastor at Covenant Life Church responsible for mercy ministries, which includes prison beta) preached on "Anger Towards God". He presented four lies the world tells us about being angry at God and then showed us what the Bible says.

I was particulary struck by one of Mark's points concerning two things that will be present when there is anger towards God. These are self-righteousness and unbelief. Self-rightousness because we have put ourselves in the judgement seat when we direct our anger towards God. Unbelief because we are denying the truths about God (holiness, sovereignty, perfection, etc) when we express anger towards him.

It is never OK to be angry at God. Instead, we should repent and glorify him. Key verse: Revelation 16:8-10.

Afterward, in my small group discussion, we shared instances where we had been angry at God. Some of the men confessed that they had been angry at God when they were arrested. We talked through the particulars of our self-righteousness and unbelief where we have directed anger at God.

  • I am angry at the God of the evangelical church. I am anger with a God who would damn for all eternity people like Mark Twain, Gandhi, Issac Asimov, Dorothy Parker, Anne Frank, The Dahli Lama, and say idiots like James Dobson, Jerry Falwell, Pat Robertson, and George W. Bush. That sort of God who damns those who don't believe the "right way" is my devil. The place where that God dwells, is my hell.

  • Lynn,

    I appreciate your honesty.

As sinners before a holy God, we all deserve to be sent to hell for eternity. But God, in his mercy, sent his only Son, Jesus Christ, to die in our place on the cross. Jesus suffered the Father's wrath in our place for our sins.

This salvation is available to anyone who repents of their sin and places their faith in Jesus Christ as their savior regardless of race, nationality, or political affiliation (the latter two being creations of man.)

Jesus said, "I am the way and the truth and the life. No one comes to the Father except through me."

It should not be amazing that there is only one way to the Father, that is through Jesus. Given our sinfullness, the truly amazing thing is that God would provide any way at all.
